A dalit colony in Leherpur in Sitapur district was reduced to ashes, leaving two children dead. The children who lost their lives are Mukesh, 8, and Priyanshi, 4. The dalits, whose houses were burnt down in the Delhi Patti village, have blamed the local village head for setting their dwellings on fire due to political vendetta. Village head Kamlesh Varma and his aides are absconding after the incident. A heavy deployment of police force has been made in the area to prevent a caste war from taking place. The victims told the police that they had not voted for Kamlesh Varma in the recent panchayat elections but he still managed to win.
After his victory, he swore revenge on the dalits and has been trying to implicate the local residents in false criminal cases. The villagers further said that on Monday night, Varma got his men to dump huge quantities of garbage adjacent to the village. Since the village head’s own field is near the dumping ground, no one could object to it. Later in the night, the garbage was set on fire and since strong winds were blowing in the area, the fire spread within minutes and engulfed the entire village. SP Manoj Kumar Sonkar said that police investigations were underway and if anyone was found guilty, strict action will be taken.
