The government on Tuesday informed Parliament that it is considering widening the scope of Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) activities to include promotion of sports, including indigenous ones, through corporate funding. Meanwhile, nominated member and five-time world boxing champion Mary Kom expressed concern in the Rajya Sabha over the training and the diet provided to players participating in international sporting events.

In her first intervention in the Upper House during the Question Hour after she was nominated as a member in April, Ms Kom expressed concern about proper training for the players as well as quality diet for them.

Stressing that the diet should be given to them on time, she said there were instances when the food had arrived just before a match. She also extended her best wishes to the Indian Olympics contingent and hoped they bring back laurels for the country. Her intervention was lauded by thumping of desks.

MoS for sports Vijay Goel, however, said if there are any specific complaints, he will look into them. The minister informed that government was spending as much as '30 lakh to 'one crore on training each of the 119 players representing India at Rio.

Olympics and preparations for the next Olympics in Tokyo have also already started.

Mr Goyal also informed that his ministry and the Corporate Affairs ministry were looking into the issue of widening the scope of Corporate Social Responsibilty (CSR) activities in sports promotion by revising the existing norms.
