A CRPF jawan was killed and four others injured in an improvised explosive device (IED) explosion in Chhattisgarh’s south Bastar district of Sukma on Friday, the police said.

The incident took place when a patrol party comprising personnel of 217th battalion of the CRPF was conducting road opening operation to pave for ongoing construction of Murliguda-Bande road under Konta police station, Sukma district additional superintendent of police (ASP) Santosh Singh said.

The blast occurred when the patrol party inadvertently stepped over an pressure IED planted by Naxals beneath the road at Murliguda, he added.

While head constable succumbed to injuries, four others, including two officers, injured in the incident have been admitted in the hospital in neighbouring state of Telangana.

Of the injured, the condition of deputy commandant Shyam Niwas was stated to be critical.

In another incident, Maoists set a passenger bus on fire at Ambili under Kutru police limits in south Bastar district of Bijapur after asking the boarders to disembark.

In another development, Bastar on Friday witnessed another mass surrender of ultras when as many as 56 rebels, including 13 hardcore Naxals, laid down arms to join the mainstream.

This was the third biggest mass surrender of Maoists in Bastar in the last three months.
