UP to fast-track cases of crime against women

The Yogi government proposes to set up 25 new SC/ST courts for cases registered under the SC/ST Act.

Lucknow: The Yogi Adityanath government will be setting up 100 special fast-track courts to deal with crime against women. A proposal prepared by the department for law and justice has been sent to the department of finance for approval.

“This was a commitment made by us in our sankalp patra and we are working on it. The total cost involved in the project is about Rs 400 crores,” UP law minister Brajesh Pathak said.

He said that the proposal involves the appointment of man power, including judicial officers, to address the issue of pending cases. He said it would require a huge infrastructure too.

“We have also proposed to establish a special unit of 1,000 women officers to investigate and aid speedy disposal of cases of crimes against women.

Besides, 1,100 other posts of various cadres have been proposed to set up the fast-track courts,” the minister said.

The provision for fast-track courts to dispose cases of crimes against women came into being after the December 16, 2012 gangrape case. Sources said currently, there are 183 fast-track courts in UP.

The Yogi government also proposes to set up 25 new SC/ST courts for cases registered under the SC/ST Act.
