Lucknow: A 17-year-old girl was allegedly gangraped and then set ablaze by two men in Majhgawan area in Hamirpur district on Sunday night.

The two accused also attacked the victim’s younger brother when he returned home. The brother, however, managed to escape and informed the local people. The accused had fled by the time the people came in.

The girl’s brother identified the accused as Sonu and Sunil and said that they had set his sister on fire after raping her. The girl was alone in the house when the accused came there.

The brother said he found the front door locked when he returned home and so he scaled a wall and entered the house.

He saw his sister on fire and the two men standing nearby with a bottle of kerosene.

“I raised an alarm, but they chased me with an axe,” he said. His father said that cash and jewellery was also missing from the house.

Assistant superintendent of police Saheb Lal Yadav, however, said that it appeared that the girl had committed suicide after being raped. He said that the police was searching for the accused.

The girl later died and the body has been sent for a post-mortem.
