The Uttar Pradesh Congress wants the party high command to hold a special Congress Working Committee meeting either in Lucknow or in Allahabad which would boost the morale of the party workers in the state going to the polls within a year.
UP Congress general secretary Umesh Pandit has urged Congress chief Sonia Gandhi to hold the CWC meeting in the state while drawing her attention to how the Congress has become the common target of the three main parties — the ruling Samajwadi Party, the BSP and the BJP. He has also written a letter in this regard.
The Congress hardly holds the CWC meeting outside the national capital, the last such meeting was held in Jaipur in January 2013 and its unwritten agenda was the elevation of Rahul Gandhi as the party vice-president.
The UP elections are going to be crucial for the Congress for a number of reasons. The party might not be fighting to form a government on its own but if it allies with the JD(U), RLD and other parties, then it could disturb the current political and caste equations.
While the SP, BSP and the BJP are playing the “backward caste” card, the Congress is in a double mind whether or not to play the “forward caste” card as it could be counter-productive in other states. Besides, can it transfer upper castes votes to the JD(U) and the RLD
If Congress insiders are to be believed, CWC meetings should ideally also be held in Gujarat, Maharashtra, Karnataka and other states but the central leadership does seem enthused.
