Congress to project a ‘face’ in UP polls

In a definite change of strategy from previous elections, the Congress in Uttar Pradesh will now project a chief ministerial candidate for the upcoming Assembly elections next year. The party is also scouting for candidates who can “just not contest but fight the elections”.

AICC general secretary in charge of UP affairs Madhusudan Mistry, in an informal chat, admitted that the party had realised the need for “giving a face” in the state elections.

Though he declined to say who could be the face of the party, he said that the projection of a chief ministerial candidate definitely helped in elections.

Mr Mistry said that the party was also working on an early announcement of candidates and wanted the name to come up with the approval of the district units. The Congress has been known to make last-minute announcement of its candidate — often on the last day of nomination — which leaves virtually no time for the candidate to plan his campaign.

He said it was astounding that while other parties lost but got 50,000 votes in Assembly elections, Congress candidates ended up with 2,000 or 3,000 votes. “This means either the selection was wrong or the candidate did not put up a fight.”
