The Congress plans to move an appropriate motion in Parliament against Prime Minister Narendra Modi over his allegation during an election rally that an Italian court had named Sonia Gandhi in AgustaWestland copter bribery case.

The Congress Parliamentary Party will decide on the “appropriate motion” to be brought against the Prime Minister, party’s chief spokesman Randeep Surjewala told reporters.

He was queried about indications by Mr Mallikarjun Kharge, the Congress leader in the Lok Sabha, to bring a privilege motion against Mr Modi in the House.

Outside Parliament, Mr Kharge said the Prime Minister’s speech could influence the probe into AgustaWestland copter bribery case as bureaucracy always likes to please its boss.

If developments in Uttarakhand and row over Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s educational qualifications have boosted morale of the Congress’ rank-and-file, the government managers are keeping the main Opposition on tenterhooks on the alleged kickbacks in the AgustaWestland copter deal.

Mr Surjewala attacked the Prime Minister for levelling “baseless” allegations against the Congress chief and accused him of indulging in “petty mud-slinging”. He claimed that Mr Modi’s action is “blinded by his insatiable desire to seek revenge against the Congress leadership”.

He alleged that the Prime Minister was resorting to “muck raking” when maintaining integrity of democracy is his responsibility.

In the Rajya Sabha, Congress member Shantaram Naik has already given a notice of breach of privilege against the Prime Minister and defence minister Manohar Parrikkar to Chairman Hamid Ansari on a day the Congress created a ruckus in Parliament against Mr Modi’s comments at a election rally in Thiruvananthapuram.
