Congress: Jungle raj in Delhi, remove BS Bassi
The Congress on Wednesday said “jungle raj” is prevailing in Delhi, following fresh violence in Patiala House court during the day.
The Congress on Wednesday said “jungle raj” is prevailing in Delhi, following fresh violence in Patiala House court during the day. While the main Opposition demanded immediate removal of police commissioner B.S. Bassi, it cautioned the Modi government not to suppress voice of the youth and learn lessons from history.
“The Delhi police has become subservient to the goondas of the BJP. Commissioner of police B.S. Bassi should be immediately suspended and removed from the post,” party spokesman and Delhi PCC chief Ajay Maken told mediapersons.
Mr Maken said it is a matter of distress to learn that “Bassi is doing this to show his loyalty to the political masters to land a key post-retirement job.”
He said that speculation is that Mr Bassi wants to become information commissioner after his retirement which is due soon. “No post-retirement placement should be given to this police commissioner,” he said.
He claimed that the violence witnessed in Patiala House court clearly indicates that the Delhi police has been “taken over by goondas of the BJP”.
All litigants constitutionally have the right to free access to any court, he said lamenting that a person under police custody, an apparent reference to JNUSU president Kanhaiya Kumar, has been beaten up in the court and so also the mediapersons.
“Unfortunately, when senior advocates who were in Patiala House court were also heckled by miscreants and police remained mute spectators. the Delhi police is hand-in-gloves with these miscreants and goondas of the BJP,” he said.
Besides, he wondered why the Delhi police has not arrested those people who are seen raising anti-national slogans at JNU in videos.
Speaking separately, another party spokesman R.P.N. Singh said what was being witnessed in Delhi in the last few days was “jungle raj”.
He alleged that it seems that the government of India is being run by “goons of the ABVP”.
“Lawlessness, goondaism and fear have become synonymous with the Modi model of governance,” Mr Singh said.
“The Indian National Congress clearly states that all those involved in anti-national activities should be tried and punished but the Congress also wants to reiterate that punishment cannot be meted out on the whims and fancies of the BJP and the ABVP,” Mr Singh said.
In Amritsar, the Punjab Congress chief Amarinder Singh attacked the BJP over the JNU row and said the Congress does not need any “lessons or certificate of patriotism” from the saffron party. He advised the BJP not to “pontificate” Congress or Mr Rahul Gandhi on nationalism and patriotism and said the party in general and the Gandhi family in particular had a record of greatest sacrifices to safeguard the unity and integrity of the country.
“Our contribution and sacrifice for the nation are exemplary and unparalleled, while the BJP has none,” Mr Amarinder Si ngh said.
On Rahul Gandhi’s visit to Jawaharlal Nehru University, he said, the Congress vice president had already clarified that he supported freedom of speech guaranteed by the Constitution but anything anti-national was absolutely unacceptable.
