Describing as “serious” the nation’s internal security situation, Congress president Sonia Gandhi on Monday expressed hope that the government is taking all possible steps to neutralise the terror threats and ensure adequate security of citizens and strategic assets. She was reacting to Pathankot terror strike.

Mrs Gandhi, while paying homage to martyrs of the attack, expressed “deep concern” for the safety of families as also strategic assets of the Air Force in view of the fact that counter-terror operations are continuing for the last 48 hours, a party statement said.

“She hoped that the Union government is seized of the serious internal security situation amidst emanating intelligence reports of more terrorist modules and is taking all necessary steps to neutralise the terror threats, besides ensuring adequate security of citizens and strategic assets,” the statement added.

Bahujan Samaj Party chief Mayawati, meanwhile, lashed out at Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s foreign policy, describing it as “inconsistent”, especially regarding Pakistan, saying that it was this that had made the borders of the country unsafe. Addressing senior party leaders and coordinators in Lucknow, Ms Mayawati said the PM had failed to curb terror attacks on the borders.

Congress leader Ajay Maken assailed the Centre over the handling of the attack, saying that terror and talks cannot go side by side. He said “conflicting” statements on the incident showed the “breakdown of institutional mechanism”. Mr Maken asked: “Why is the Prime Minister giving a new description of terrorists as ‘enemies of humanity’ ”
