The main Opposition Congress party on Thursday backed writers, artists, scientists and social scientists for protesting against growing intolerance after realising that the Centre and the BJP are on the defensive on this issue and thus getting isolated.
“We take their protest as part of the process of democratic culture but the BJP and RSS and their likes have total abhorrence to any kind of opposition and freedom of speech. We support the right to speak up against anything which they believe is wrong, “ said the Congress spokesperson Ajoy Kumar.
Responding to a question that over 50 historians are reported to have come out with the letter to Prime Minister protesting against the climate of intolerance in the country, Mr Kumar said whether it is the writers, movie directors, FTII students, IIT directors, scientists, social scientists, everybody from all walks of society — despite Mr Jaitley’s efforts to call it “manufactured”, have understood that this government’s level of intolerance, level of ability to intimidate, ability to threaten is very dangerous.”
He further said that Mr Jatiley said it is a “manufactured crisis”. “I don’t think he understands. I think there is a ‘Manufacturing Crisis’ in the country. It is not the ‘Manufactured’ issue.”
People of all hues who object to this anti-people, anti-democratic action of this government are labelled Congress person or a Congress stooge which is very unfortunate, he said while drawing attention to how most of the people in their respective walk of life, they have protested even against the Congress Party.
“(And) we take their protest as part of the process of democratic culture,” he said.
To another question that the BJP MP R.K. Singh had said that Chhota Rajan’s arrest is not a big deal but catching Dawood Ibrahim would be a big achievement. He said the BJP has promised to arrest Dawood during the 2014 Lok Sabha elections but it should not become a “jumla” like the promise of depositing '15 lakh in every citizen’s account. He said R.S. Singh’s statement showed how the BJP MPs lacked faith in their government.
The Congress spokesperson also asked four questions to the BJP and two questions to the Delhi chief minister Arvind Kejriwal with regard to the issue of O.P. Chautala’s parole and moves to shift the INLD leader to Punjab from Delhi.
He asked “ What is the alliance between the INLD and the BJP What have been the Modi Government’s instructions to the Lt. Governor regarding the transfer of Mr. Chautala to Bhatinda What is Modi Government’s stand on granting of parole to Chautala and what instructions have been given to Najeeb Jung
He also wanted Mr Kejriwal to clarify “ Did he meet Dushyant Chautala, MP and what was the meeting about and he should make the discussion public.
He furthe asked did Punjab achief minister Prakash Singh Badal talk to Mr Kejriwal on the transfer of Chautala to Bhatinda jail and did Mr. Kejriwal agree that he will not object to the transfer.
