Congress against BSP tieup in UP

Despite the Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) supporting the Harish Rawat government in Uttarakhand, chances of a Congress-BSP alliance in Uttar Pradesh are negligible.

AICC general secretary in charge of UP affairs Madhusudan Mistry said here on Tuesday that there were no chances of an alliance with the BSP in UP. “The situation is different in every state. In Uttarakhand it was different and in UP it is different. We are thankful for the BSP support in Uttarakhand,” he said.

“We are prepared to contest all the 403 seats on our own and we are going it alone in UP,” he added.

The AICC general secretary also ridiculed the media reports about any proposal by political strategist Prashant Kishor suggesting that Mr Rahul Gandhi or Ms Priyanka Gandhi be projected as the chief ministerial candidate in the UP polls. “We have no information about Priyanka Vadra joining active politics. There is no truth in such reports. It is up to the high command to decide on the CM candidate as the party leaders and workers of the state are demanding such a move to counter the other Opposition parties,” he said. He also denied any move by the party high command to change the organisational set-up for UP at present.

Mr Mistry said the Congress would hold a workers’ conference later this month and Congress vice-president Rahul Gandhi was expected to attend. Mr Mistry added that the party was ready with the names of the panel of candidates in each of the 403 Assembly constituencies of UP and that Mr Gandhi would sit with state leaders to give his final approval to the list.

He said the party would soon take out a yatra in Bundelkhand region to know the ground realities because the Samajwadi Party in UP and the BJP at the Centre were misleading the nation on the issue.

Earlier on Tuesday, Mr Mistry and UPCC president Nirmal Khatri held a meeting with Mr Prashant Kishor in Lucknow. Mr Kishor also met 582 of the 685 block presidents of the party.
