Quota issue: Congress accuses BJP, RSS of caste politics

After Gujarat, Haryana is the second BJP-ruled state facing the heat on reservation issue while the demand for reservation to Marathas has not died down yet in Maharashtra, the third BJP-ruled state. If the BJP has been ruling Gujarat on the backing of powerful Patel community, its victory in Haryana and Maharashtra has hurt jats and Marathas because both the communities do not see the BJP as their natural party.

Meanwhile, the Congress on Saturday accused the ruling BJP and the RSS of “conspiring to divide Haryana on caste lines”, blaming the saffron party for the continued violence in the state over the jat stir for quota. Congress vice-president Rahul Gandhi appealed to the people to maintain peace and resolve the issue through talks.

Making a similar appeal, AICC communication depa-rtment chief Randeep Surjewala appealed for “withdrawing” the agitation in the interest of the state and asked the Central and the state governments to “take strong action against those inciting violence”.

Leader of the Haryana Congress Legislature Party Kiran Choudhry appealed protesters to shun violence.
