The Congress party is confident that a “third alternative” will not emerge before the Lok Sabha elections. The ruling party is sure that political ambitions of regional parties at loggerheads in the states will not allow for the formation of a third front to challenge the two main parties — the Congress and the BJP. The parties may have launched discussions to form a third front, but the Congress leaders are already questioning the stability of such a grouping provided one is formed at least. They ask how can political parties like the SP and the BSP, which are at loggerheads in UP; AIADMK and DMK, which are bitter opponents in Tamil Nadu; Trinamul Congress and the Left, at war in West Bengal; and Janata Dal (U) and RJD, bitter enemies in Bihar; join together to for, a group “Moreover, who will unite them and how long will they remain united,” a senior Congress officebearer added on Monday.
