Chhota Rajan to be brought to Delhi first

The Indian team, comprising officers from the CBI, and the Delhi and Mumbai police, arrived in Bali on Sunday with a detailed dossier on 55-year-old Rajan and his role in various crimes in India. “Rajan in all likelihood may now stay in Delhi for a considerable period of time, where he will face trial in all cases pending with the Delhi police. A special court may also be set up to try these cases, with the government examining such a move”, a source said. The Mumbai police may now have to wait for its turn to get Rajan’s custody, the sources said.

Maharashtra CM Devendra Fadnavis, who was making claims about bringing Chhota Rajan to Mumbai, said on Wednesday that a decision on his custody would be taken in consultation with the Centre. Talking to reporters on the sidelines of a World Economic Forum meeting here, Mr Fadnavis said his government would press for Rajan’s custody after he was deported from Bali in Indonesia.

Rajan, whose original name is Rajendra Sadashiv Nikhalje, was arrested in Bali on a Interpol red corner notice after a tipoff by the Australian authorities to the Indonesians. In the absence of an extradition treaty, the Indian authorities have already provided documents to the Indonesians about Rajan’s Indian identity to facilitate his deportation.
