Chhattisgarh: Amit Shah cancels visit, sparks confusion

BJP president Amit Shah’s “last minute” decision to drop his visit to Chhattisgarh, scheduled for Tuesday, led to confusion in the ruling BJP in the state.
The development is viewed in the state unit of the party with much significance as it comes close on the heels of the central party leadership nominating BJP general secretary Ram Vichar Netam, considered a rebel leader, to the Rajya Sabha from Chhattisgarh ignoring chief minister Raman Singh choice, former minister Nankiram Kanwar.
Mr Shah was scheduled to address the two-day “Chintan Baithak” (introspection meet) of the state BJP at a forest resort in the east Chhattisgarh district of Mahasamund on Monday.
“Mr Shah was scheduled to arrive at the Raipur airport at around 8.30 in the morning. We have received the message at around 8 am that he was not coming,” a senior BJP leader told the Asian Age.
He, however, refused to hazard a guess as to whether there was any political reason behind Mr Shah’s decision to drop his visit to Chhattisgarh.
“All I can say is that the rebel camp has received a boost after Mr Netam was given RS nomination. This, in fact, has come a jolt to the chief minister’s camp which considered it as their first defeat against the dissidents,” he added.
