With the West Bengal Assembly elections on, the Modi government replayed the Netaji card on Friday as it announced that a memorial dedicated to Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose will be built in the national capital. The announcement coincided with the Centre releasing the third batch of 25 declassified files related to the national hero.
The documents consist of five files each from the Prime Minister’s Office (PMO) and the home ministry, and 15 files from the ministry of external affairs (MEA) pertaining to the period between 1956 and 2009.
After releasing the files, Union culture minister Mahesh Sharma said: “The people of this country, specially the youth, want to know about the life of Netaji, his contribution towards freedom fight. So, this is a big achievement.”
According to the files, former Prime Minister Morarji Desai had declined to accept the findings of two commission of inquiries that concluded that Bose died in a plane crash in August 1945. He also reopened the issue of a fresh inquiry about the disappearance of Netaji and felt it would be more effective to have an investigative inquiry by experts to find out the reality. Former MP Samar Guha, in a letter dated February 26, 1991, to then MP Madhu Dandavate, said, “...Morarji Desai, in a public statement in September 1978, declined to accept the findings of the Shah Nawaz Committee and Khosla commission of inquiry into ‘disappearance of Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose’ since August 18, 1945 as conclusive.”
