The CBI registered a case on Thursday to probe the murder of Bihar journalist Rajdeo Ranjan. The case was registered against unknown assailants. Ranjan, who was the bureau chief of a Hindi daily, was shot dead near a fruit market in Bihar’s Siwan district on May 13.
The move comes four months after the Bihar government recommended a CBI probe into the murder of Ranjan.
A CBI team would go to Siwan soon, sources in the agency said.
The Ranjan murder case come into the limelight again after a photograph of absconding suspects Mohammad Kaif and Mohammad Javed standing with former RJD MP Shahabuddin, after he was releases on bail from Bhagalpur jail last Saturday.
CBI sources said that they suspected the killing was the handiwork of some influential people.
On May 13, two bullets were fired at Ranjan that hit him on his head and neck. He was rushed to a hospital, where the doctors declared him brought dead.
Sources said that they had taken over the investigation in the case. “The CBI has registered a case under section 302, 120-B, 34 of IPC and section 27 of Arms Act against unknown assailants relating to alleged murder of senior journalist Rajdeo Ranjan on the request of Bihar government and further notification from government of India,” sources said.
The state government had issued a notification requesting the CBI to take over the investigation of the murder case on May 16.
