CBI to quiz officials in Bansals’ suicide case

The CBI will soon seek an explanation from its DIG Sanjeev Gautam and his team members in connection with allegations of harassment levelled against them by former DG of corporate affairs B.K. Bansal.
Bansal, who was facing graft charges, committed suicide on September 27, nearly two months after his wife and daughter also killed themselves.
According to sources, the fact-finding committee set under a joint director-level officer is looking into allegations of human rights abuse levelled by Bansal, who committed suicide along with his son last month. In his purported suicide note, Bansal alleged that Gautam and his team members harassed his wife and daughter to an extent that they committed suicide. He alleged that even he was being harassed and wanted to end the life.
The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) had also sought an explanation from the CBI, which has been provided to it. The NHRC expressed “deep anguish and shock” and said it has taken suo motu cognisance of media reports that “mental and physical torture” by some CBI officers during a probe in a corruption case led Bansal and his family to commit suicide.
The NHRC observed that the police is supposed to investigate the offences as per law and in a “human rights-friendly way.” “They cannot be allowed to resort to physical assault,” it said.
