CBI to question Congress leader in Agusta probe

The CBI is all set to question a senior Congress leader as part of its investigations into the multi-crore AgustaWestland helicopter deal case. The premier investigative agency is gearing up to summon the Congress leader soon after the Budget Session is concluded on May 13. Sources said, “Questioning of the Congress leader is likely to take place between May 15 to May 20.” Incidentally, the questioning is likely to come close to the poll verdict of five state Assembly elections.
Meanwhile, the CBI on Monday questioned former IAF Chief S.P. Tyagi about the alleged inflow of foreign remittances in his account in 2009, after his retirement.
Sources claimed that investigations by the agency have revealed that foreign remittances were allegedly received by him in 2009, two years after his retirement. They said the former IAF Chief was asked about the source of these funds, reasons behind the remittances, and also his travels to Italy after his retirement. It is believed that the agency sleuths confronted him with his account statements and also sought specific clarification from him during the questioning.
Investigations by the Central probe agencies —the CBI and the Enforcement Directorate (ED) — have revealed that cousins of former IAF Chief — Sanjeev, alias Julie, Rajeev, alias Docsa, and Sandeep — allegedly received more than 3 lakh euros from the middlemen to swing the deal in AgustaWestland’s favour.
Most of the remittances were paid to them during the tenure of Mr Tyagi as the IAF Chief between 2004 and 2007, it is alleged. The agency has quizzed them on this so-called coincidence but sources say they have not been able to give a satisfactory explanation.
Investigations have also revealed that the Tyagi brothers allegedly received 1.26 lakh euro after March 2004 and 2 lakh euro after February 2005.
