CBI files case on senior IRS officer, searches sites

The CBI on Wednesday registered a “disproportionate assets” case against Indian Revenue Service officer (IRS) M.

The CBI on Wednesday registered a “disproportionate assets” case against Indian Revenue Service officer (IRS) M. Krishnaswamy and carried out searches at 14 locations in Tamil Nadu, including Chennai.

According to sources, a case has been registered against Mr Krishnaswamy, a income-tax commissioner ranked-officer of 1988 batch presently posted as director (investigation) at settlement commission (Chennai) and eight others for possession of disproportionate assets.

Talking to reporters here, a CBI spokesperson said, “The officer and his family were in possession of assets to the tune of '6.1 crore. The other accused (family members of the officer and certain benami property holders) had allegedly abetted him in commission of said offence. It is further alleged that the public servant had acquired huge assets in the name of his immediate family members and benami holders at Chennai and various other places in Tamil Nadu, including at his native village near Palani (Tamil Nadu).” The Tamil Nadu unit of the CBI has registered a DA case against the IRS officer and eight others. They will soon be called for questioning in connection with the case.

Sources further claimed, the officer had allegedly invested in “benami” properties and some investments in movie business through proxies. The agency sleuths conducted searches at 14 locations in Chennai, other places in Tamil Nadu in connection with the case.
