CBI begins probe in highway rape case

The incident had taken place when six members of a Noida-based family were travelling to Shahjahanpur in Western UP. At the national highway passing through Bulandshahr, their car was stopped by criminals who dragged the 13-year-old girl and her mother out and raped them in a nearby field. The Allahabad high court had ordered the CBI to take over investigation in the case.

Talking to reporters here, CBI spokesperson Devpreet Singh said the agency has registered a case under IPC sections related to dacoity, gangrape, kidnapping among others besides provisions of the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences Act. “CBI took over the investigation of case No.838 of 2016 registered at police station Kotwali Dehat, district Bulandshahr (Uttar Pradesh) on the allegations of abduction, dacoity and rape of a lady and her daughter by five-six assailants in fields situated in village Dostpur, district Bulandshahr in the intervening night of 29/30 July 2016,” she said.

The agency has constituted a team of the Delhi-based CBI’s special crime unit to probe the case. The team, headed by a DIG-level officer, visited Bulandshahr on Friday along with forensic experts who are likely to examine and recreate the crime scene, sources said.

The state police recently arrested six persons, including the main accused Salim Bawariya, in connection with the case. The CBI will soon seek custody of all arrested persons for their interrogation. The agency sleuths will also meet the victims and their family members. The Allahabad high court had ordered the CBI to take over investigation into the incident. The victims were on way to Shahjahanpur to meet their relatives following a death in the family. The victims also alleged that initially the police did not pay attention to their complaints.
