Cabinet okays rail projects worth over Rs 10,000 crore

The Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs (CCEA) on Wednesday approved critical rail augmentation projects worth Rs 10,736 crore.

The Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs (CCEA) on Wednesday approved critical rail augmentation projects worth Rs 10,736 crore. Poll-bound UP and Gujarat, besides MP, Maharashtra and Andhra Pradesh, are likely to benefit from the projects.

“There are a total of five new projects, three doubling projects for 763 km and two third-line projects for 514 km. Doubling of the 116.17 km Surendranagar-Rajkot project in Gujarat at an estimated cost of Rs 1,002.39 crore, which will be completed in four years, will give a major push to the state’s industrialisation ability,” said Union railway minister Suresh Prabhu, adding it would help the ever-increasing freight traffic between the Okha-Rajkot, Porbandar-Kanalus, Veraval-Rajkot and Maliya Maiyana-Navalakhi-Dahinsara-Wankaner sections.

UP bagged the 180.77-km doubling of the Roza-Sitapur Cantt-Burhwal bro-ad gauge single line project.

This is to cost an estimated Rs 1,295.42 crore and is to be completed in five years. “The doubling of this line will not only spur socio-economic development of the area but also ensure continuous double-line track from Gorakhpur to Delhi via Sitapur Cantonment and Moradabad. Barabanki and Sitapur districts of UP will also gain,” said Mr Prabhu.
