Tribal voters have come into focus with the EC announcing Assembly polls for Chhattisgarh, scheduled to be held in two phases on November 11 and 19, on Friday. The tribals, who constitute 35 per cent of state’s population of 2.45 crore, play a decisive role in deciding the fate of candidates in 40 out of the total 90 Assembly seats in Chhattisgarh. All these tribal-dominated Assembly constituencies are in south Chhattisgarh’s Bastar division and north Chhattisgarh. Besides, there are at least half-a-dozen Assembly constituencies in other parts of the state where tribal voters can influence the outcome of the polls in these seats due to their sizeable presence. That was the reason why the ruling BJP and its principal contender, the Congress, preferred to bring their respective star campaigners to launch pre-poll campaign from the tribal-dominated areas in the state. While Rahul Gandhi blew the poll bugle for Congress at Jagdalpur, headquarters of Bastar division, last month, the BJP fielded both L.K. Advani and Narendra Modi to launch party’s electioneering recently.
