The Congress plans to raise during the Budget Session of Parliament next month the issue of political statements made by the governors of West Bengal, Bihar, Rajasthan, Tripura, Assam, Uttar Pradesh and Karnataka in the past few months, besides the role of the Arunachal Pradesh governor.

These governors are trivialising the high office by acting as pracharaks of the RSS and the long arm of government, it said here on Monday. Although party insiders fear the government may curtail the session — despite having a majority — due to the limitations of its floor managers, the real reason is that it is unsure of the stand of its allies and friendly parties, like the Shiv Sena, Shiromani Akali Dal, AIADMK and BJD, on different issues.

Senior Congress leader and former Union minister Kapil Sibal said, “There should be a national debate and the Prime Minister should be asked to justify not only what is happening in Arunachal Pradesh or what the governor has done, but also what other governors are doing by carrying forward the RSS agenda in those states.”

Addressing a press conference at AICC headquarters, Mr Sibal drew attention to the statement of Rajasthan governor Kalyan Singh suggesting an amendment to the national anthem and Assam governor P.B. Acharya saying, “Hindustan is for Hindus. There is nothing wrong with that. They (Indian Muslims) are free to go anywhere. They can stay here (in India). If they want to go to Bangladesh or Pakistan, they are free to go.”

UP governor Ram Naik had said, “Ram Mandir should be built as soon as possible. That is the wish of the Indian citizens and the wish should be fulfilled.” On the RSS he (Mr Ram Naik) had said, “There is no provision of resigning from RSS. One is a swayamsevak as long as he feels to be one. I consider myself a swayamsevak.”
