The ruling BJP in Chhattisgarh suffered a setback with the Opposition Congress winning eight out of 11 urban local bodies in the just-concluded civic polls, the results of which were declared on Thursday.

One municipal corporation, four municipal councils and six nagar panchayats had gone to the polls on December 28.

The BJP had won seven out of these 11 urban local bodies in the last polls. The loss of the BJP in Khairagarh municipal council in Rajnandgaon district, being represented by chief minister Raman Singh, and Bhilai municipal corporation in Durg district, being represented by state higher education minister Prem Prakash Pandey, has particularly come as a major embarrassment to the party.

While Chhattisgarh Pradesh Congress Committee (CPCC) president Bhupesh Baghel attributed the good show by his party in the civic body polls to unity in the party, the BJP, incidentally, blamed infighting in the party for its dismal performance in the elections.
