BJP unlikely to project CM candidate in UP
The Bharatiya Janata Party in Uttar Pradesh is not likely to project a chief ministerial candidate for the 2017 Assembly polls.
The Bharatiya Janata Party in Uttar Pradesh is not likely to project a chief ministerial candidate for the 2017 Assembly polls.
Mr Om Mathur, who is in charge of UP affairs, told mediapersons on Sunday, “Our party believes in collective leadership and we will contest the elections together. If the parliamentary board decides otherwise, there may be a change later on.”
It may be recalled that a few months ago, it was Mr Mathur who had said in Lucknow that the BJP would project a “face” for the UP Assembly elections. The decision of not projecting a chief ministerial candidate has apparently been taken after the Hindu Yuva Vahini put up posters demanding that BJP MP Yogi Adityanath be named as the chief ministerial candidate. The Hindu Yuva Vahini also threatened to boycott the polls if this was not done.
Supporters of BJP MP Varun Gandhi have also been demanding that he should be projected as the party’s face in the Assembly polls.
Mr Mathur said that the party would seek votes on the basis of the achievements of the Modi government at the Centre. Replying to a questions on the Congress having Prashant Kishor as its master strategist for the UP Assembly elections, Mr Mathur said, “Elections cannot be contested and won only because of one person. His presence will not make a difference to the BJP which depends on its party cadres and collective leadership.”
