UP BJP MPs in Catch-22 situation

Two days after Prime Minister Narendra Modi pulled up his party MPs for not spreading the word about the government schemes and not being active enough on the social media, the MPs said they had a reason for not doing so.

“The party asks us to talk about the Modi government’s achievements but when we go to the people in our constituency, we face complaints about the lack of power and water and damaged roads, all of which are within the purview of the state government. The people are not willing to listen to our schemes unless we can guarantee them the basic amenities,” said a BJP MP from eastern UP.

The MP said the situation was getting increasingly volatile and people are blaming their representative for all the ills.

Another MP, also from eastern UP, said that whenever he attended weddings in his constituencies, he was ‘almost attacked’ by people who wanted to know why they should vote for him if he cannot ensure water and electricity for them.

“I have stopped attending social functions because of such unpleasant situations. The people are blaming us for all the ills and turn their back on us the moment we talk of central schemes – most of which , in any case, are not being properly implemented”, he said.

Another BJP MP said being active on social media was getting “insulting” and “humiliating” for him. “The moment I post something about our government’s initiatives and schemes, I get trolled and most of the identities are obviously fake. It is not pleasant to read.”

The BJP MPs also feel that the BJP leadership is not “sufficiently critical” of the ruling Samajwadi party in the election year.

“People want to know whether we have a tacit understanding with SP. Our leaders criticise the Congress which has little relevance in the state but do not utter a word about the misrule of the Samajwadi government. We have problems in answering uncomfortable questions on this issue because we do not know what is actually cooking”, said a BJP MP from western UP. He added that if the party did not begin confronting the SP in western UP, it could lose ground. “Senior UP minister Azam Khan has been making rather derogatory statements about our leaders but there is no reaction from the top party leadership, which is disturbing us”, he added.
