BJP lists for Assam, West Bengal polls released
BJP’s central election committee (CEC) on Wednesday announced names of 88 candidates for the coming Assembly election in Assam and 52 candidates for the West Bengal polls.
BJP’s central election committee (CEC) on Wednesday announced names of 88 candidates for the coming Assembly election in Assam and 52 candidates for the West Bengal polls. The party announced that its Jorhat MP, Kamakhaya Prasad Tasha, would take on Assam chief minister Tarun Gogoi on Titabar Assembly seat. The BJP will contest 90 of the total 126 Assembly constituencies in Assam.
Union minister and head of the election management committee for the Assam election Sarbananda Sonowal will contest from the Majuli Assembly constituency. Also, the state unit chief of the party, Mr Sonowal, is being seen as the party’s chief ministerial candidate. Former Congress leader Himanta Biswa Sarma, who had joined the BJP recently, will contest from the Jalukbari seat.
Other candidates whose name were announced also include Atul Bora from Dispur, Manoj Baruah from Bhawanipur, Tapan Gogoi from Sonari, Dilip Paul from Silichar, Aminul Haq-ue from Sonai, Dipak Dev from Badarpur and Sum Ronghang from the Diphu Assembly constituency.
BJP president Amit Shah chaired the meeting which was also attended by Prime Minister Narendra Modi besides other CEC members.
“Our list of candidates has the representation of greater Assamese society. It is a reflection of greater Assam,” Union minister and party’s parliamentary board secretary J.P. Nadda said.
Among the prominent names in the list of West Bengal candidates include actor-turned-politicians Locket Chatterjee from Mayureswar and Joy Ban-erjee from Suri seat. From Basirhat Dakshin, party has renominated Shammik Bhattacharya, fielded Gautam Bhattac-harya from Kharagpur, Nirmal Karmkar from the Asansol Uttar Assembly seat.
Meanwhile, the Election Commission has tweaked the date of filing nominations for the second phase of the Assembly elections in Assam as it was clashing with the biennial polls to two Rajya Sabha seats in the state.
