BJP is likely gearing up to make changes in its organisation in July with due focus on inducting more women, dalit and OBC members into the party’s top leadership with an eye on the upcoming Assembly elections in 2017.
BJP president Amit Shah has held a number of meetings with Prime Minister Narendra Modi to discuss organisational issues including the team.
Names of leaders including former Jharkhand chief minister Arjun Munda, former Union minister Ramshankar Katheriya and Navsari MP, C R Patil are doing the rounds to be part of Mr Shah’s team. Former Union minister and Agra MP, Dr Ramshankar Katheriya and Mr Arjun Munda’s names are doing the rounds for the post of national general secretary. If either of them is inducted as the national general secretary, the other would be made the national vice president. Dr Katheriya is a prominent Dalit face of the party from poll bound state of Uttar Pradesh. Mr Munda is a prominent tribal face of the party. Mr Patil, sources said, could be inducted as party’s new treasurer.
A woman leader from UP could also be accommodated in the team as one of the vice presidents from either UP or Punjab, another election bound state. The name of the former Union minister, D Purandeshwari, is doing the rounds to head the BJP Mahila Morcha. Ahead of the last general elections, the former MP from Visakhapatnam had joined BJP after quitting Congress. For the post of the party’s youth wing, the name of an MP from the Mumbai region was doing the rounds. But sources disclosed that BJP top brass is now rethinking this name. Currently, the youth wing is headed by Hamirpur MP and BCCI chief, Anurag Thakur.
The party leadership seem to be ready to reshuffle some national secretaries due to non-performance. Mr Shah’s team could also see one or two new spokespersons.
