In a big setback to the BJP in Varanasi and Lucknow, all its candidates have been defeated in the Cantonment Board elections, the results for which were declared on Monday.
Varanasi is Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s Lok Sabha constituency and Lucknow is Union home minister Rajnath Singh’s constituency.
In Varanasi, the BJP lost all seven seats to independents and in Lucknow also the party was defeated in all eight seats by independents.
In the Agra Cantonment Board polls, the BJP won only one out of eight seats and in Mathura, it could win only two out of seven seats. The party faced complete rout in Bareilly too.
State BJP president Laxmikant Bajpai blamed the party’s defeat on the fact that the candidates did not contest on the BJP symbol.
The defeat of the BJP in the Cantonment Board elections in these two constituencies that are believed to be party bastions is rather shocking.
“This is a wake-up call for the party and bits leaders who are still banking on the Modi wave to ride to success in the 2017 Assembly elections. These results indicate clearly that if the candidates do not live up to expectations, they will face defeat and the Modi magic cannot be expected to see them through each time,” admitted a veteran party leader.
The Cantonment Board is a civic administration body under the control of ministry of defence. The board comprises elected members besides ex-officio and nominated members as per the Cantonments Act, 2006.
