With Navjot Singh Sidhu opening up on his resignation from Rajya Sabha, Delhi chief minister Arvind Kejriwal on Monday said BJP wanted to prevent the cricketer-turned-politician from taking up the issue of drug abuse in Punjab.
Earlier in the day, Mr Sidhu said he quit the Upper House because BJP wanted him to stay away from Punjab elections.
“Sidhu wud hv spoken against drugs, if he went to Punjab. BJP prevented him. Who was BJP trying to protect Shocking,” Mr Kejriwal said on Twitter after Sidhu’s press conference.
Mr Sidhu, who was elected to the Lok Sabha three times on BJP ticket, was asked to make way for his party colleague Arun Jaitley in Amritsar during the 2014 general election.
Mr Sidhu alleged that he was asked to shift constituency and stay away from politics in Punjab to “serve personal interests”, apparently suggesting that the saffron party was acting under its ally Shiromani Akali Dal’s pressure.
The AAP has kept its cards close to its chest amid speculation that Mr Sidhu’s could be the party’s face in Punjab elections next year.
