BJP to assess UP Hindu ‘exodus’

The reported exodus of Hindu families from Kairana in Shamli district in Uttar Pradesh has prompted the BJP to send a high-level team to assess the situation on the spot.

The reported exodus of Hindu families from Kairana in Shamli district in Uttar Pradesh has prompted the BJP to send a high-level team to assess the situation on the spot.

UP BJP president Keshav Prasad Maurya said here on Friday that an 11-member-team of MPs, mostly from west UP, would be sent by the party to get the exact picture of the situation there and submit a report to the party.

Mr Maurya said that the names of the MPs who will go to Kairana would be announced very soon and they will also submit their reports at the earliest.

BJP MP Hukum Singh has claimed that there has been a mass exodus of Hindu families from Kairana town over the past two years. The leader released a list of 346 families that had fled the town, leaving behind their properties after they were allegedly targeted and persecuted by another community.

The MP said the list mentions only the families of Kairana, and if those who have migrated from other parts of the district are included, the number would be much more.

Mr Singh said that Kairana has become the “new Kashmir” and there had been more than 10 communal killings in the town in recent months. He said that he had met Union home minister Rajnath Singh last week and the latter is likely to visit Kairana to study the situation and ground realities.

Meanwhile, Mr Maurya, alleged that the state of affairs in UP was miserable with chaos and anarchy prevailing everywhere. He said while ruling SP was only working for a particular caste and minting money through illegal deeds, the BSP was focusing on Dalits for its vote bank politics. As per the 2011 Census, Kairana had 30 per cent Hindus while the percentage of Muslims is 68. Kairana is located close to Muzaffarnagar which was hit by communal riots in 2013.
