The BJP in Uttar Pradesh has decided to up the ante against the ruling Samajwadi Party.
The BJP will stage a seven-day dharna against the misrule of the Akhilesh Yadav government from November 25, particularly to highlight the deteriorating law and order situation in the state.
State BJP spokesman Vijay Bahadur Pathak said on Wednesday that in the first phase, the dharna will be held in Aligarh, Kannauj, Varanasi and Azamgarh.
“In Aligarh, the police laxity has been evident in the Gagan murder case, while in Kannauj, the cops opened fire at one community during idol immersion. The murder of corporator Shiv Seth in Varanasi and the killing of advocate Singhasan Yadav in Azamgarh reflect the prevailing situation in the state. Crime against women and cases of police atrocities have also gone up,” the spokesman said.
The seven-day dharna in these four cities will include the participation of local MPs, MLAs, party leaders and workers from all adjoining districts.
The agitation against the ruling Samajwadi Party is a part of the BJP’s two-pronged strategy to revive itself in Uttar Pradesh.
“Firstly, there is a strong message that the BJP and SP leadership has a tacit political understanding on certain issues. This perception is damaging us we are being viewed with suspicion and may not be able to take advantage of the anti-incumbency factor against the Akhilesh government.
