Rajasthan BJP MLA Bhawani Singh Rajawat may have let Bihar chief minister Nitish Kumar off the hook much to the chagrin of his party, which has been building the “jungle raj” campaign against the latter following the murder of a youth in a road rage incident by his party MLC’s son. After the murder of a student from Bihar by fellow students from his state, Mr Rajawat, known for controversial statements, allegedly accused students from Bihar of “spoiling” the atmosphere of Kota city and said they should be driven out of Kota.

Satyaprakash, 19, a resident of Nabada district in Bihar, was allegedly attacked by a group of students on Thursday while Sandeep Kumar, also from Bihar, sustained injuries in the attack. He said: “Bihari students have created an atmosphere of crime and it is necessary for people’s safety that students with criminal backgrounds should be asked to leave the city.” Later, after being admonished by the party, Mr Rajawat retracted his statement. He issued a statement saying he never said Biharis should be sent back. “I only talked about those Bihari students who have formed a gang by the name of Bihar Tiger Force and are involved in criminal activities.”

Earlier, accusing the students from Bihar of “spoiling” the atmosphere of Kota city, the MLA from Ladpura in Kota said, “In the past two to five years, in 90 per cent criminal cases there is involvement of students from Bihar.”

The MLA added that if this situation prevails, there is no doubt that one of them might go on to become another “Kanhaiya Kumar” (JNUSU leader) and will indulge in anti-national activities.

He said a list should be prepared of all Bihari students enrolled in various coaching centres and their background should be ascertained. His statement may take the heat off Nitish Kumar, who may use this opportunity to divert the attention from the deteriorating law and order situation in the state and put the BJP on the backfoot.

Bihar deputy CM Tejaswi Yadav is learnt to have written a letter to Rajasthan CM Vasundhara Raje Scindia, expressing his concern over the murder.
