Bigger role for Kayani likely after he ‘retires’

Pakistan Army chief Gen. Ashfaq Parvez Kayani, who said on Sunday that he will retire as scheduled on November 29, could well assume a “bigger role” in national security and foreign policy matters in that country, Indian intelligence agencies say. These agencies are exploring the possible role he could play in the near future, and feel there is a strong likelihood of Gen. Kayani taking over as chairman of the joint chiefs of staff committee “in a reformed and more powerful form”. Another possibility is that Pakistan could revive its National Security Council, to be headed by him. The NSC was originally set up in 1969, later revived by Gen. Pervez Musharraf when he was President, and then deactivated in 2008.
