Facing flak for violating the model code of conduct in the ongoing West Bengal Assembly elections, chief minister Mamata Banerjee has finally responded to the showcause notice issued to her by the Election Commission (EC).
The EC had earlier rejected the explanation given by the chief secretary of the state government on behalf of the chief minister.
The EC had said in its notice that prima facie the chief minister had violated the model code of conduct. Sources said that the EC has received a reply from Ms Banerjee, which is under examination. More details were not available.
Incidentally, the EC had given the West Bengal chief minister time till Friday morning to respond to the showcause notice. It may be recalled that the EC, in a strongly-worded letter to Ms Banerjee on Tuesday, had made it clear that the notice was issued to her in her capacity as Trinamul Congress chief and not as chief minister of West Bengal.
The EC, while rejecting the response sent by the chief secretary, in a separate communication, pulled him up, saying it was not “appropriate” for the state government to respond to a showcause notice.
