Basanta Panda was on Thursday elected unopposed as the new Orissa BJP president. He was the lone candidate to file his nomination papers for the top post.

As soon as the time for filing of nomination papers elapsed at 10.30 am, returning officer Rajkishore Das declared Mr Panda’s name as the new president.

The 53-year-old Mr Panda was first elected to the state Assembly in 2000. He was elected to the state Assembly for the second time in 2014 and is currently the leader of the BJP Legislature Party.

Known as a firebrand leader, Mr Panda has been a Sangh Parivar member for a long time. He was an active participant in the Ram Janmabhoomi movement led by BJP patriarch L.K. Advani.

Although the names of Mr Pratap Sarangi and Mr Bijoy Mohapatra were doing the rounds, Mr Panda’s name was finalised after consultations with senior state leaders.

The new president said he would launch a movement against the corrupt BJD government in the state. “My first battle will be against the BJD government which is headed by a corrupt and tainted person,” he said, an indirect reference to BJD president Naveen Patnaik.
