Senior UP minister Azam Khan on Friday offered to resign from the membership of the UP Assembly as well as his ministerial post if even one legislator held him responsible for the riots in Muzaffarnagar.

Even as Mr Khan offeredto resign, the journalists summoned for a hearing by the Vidhan Sabha speaker on Friday failed to turn up saying that they had received the summon rather late and had not been provided a copy of the report against them.

The Assembly members, barring the BJP, agreed to give additional time to the channel and its representative who have already been found guilty of faking the sting operation by a House committee, headed b y Satish Nigam.

The speaker announced that the channel and its representatives would have to present themselves before the House on March 4 at 12.30 pm.

Earlier, soon after the question hour, UP Vidhan Sabha principal secretary Pradeep Dubey read out a letter sent by the channel head, seeking more time to present their case before the house.

Leader of opposition Swami Prasad Maurya said that though the channel had ample time to prepare their reply since the report had been tabled almost ten days ago, natural justice demanded that they should be given more time. “The sting operation was prepared through the cut-paste technology and those responsible for this should be severely punished. If the channel representatives fail to turn up on the appointed date and time, warrants should be issued against them.

BJP leader Suresh Khanna said his party was not a part of the controversy. The BJP, earlier, had withdrawn its member from the committee appointed to probe the sting operation. Congress and RLD members were also of the view that the channel should be given more time.
