Miscreants attacked and injured a 55-year-old Catholic priest with a machete in Northern Assam’s Udalguri district on Sunday night.

Sushil John Soren, the pastor of Bhairabkunda parish, under the Tezpur diocese, was admitted into a private nursing home here after the attack. He had to undergo surgery for his injuries.

The hospital on Tuesday said Father Soren was stable and recovering.

Father Soren, who said he was followed by a stranger, was assaulted at around 9 pm when he was returning home after conducting night prayers at the parish’s boys hostel.

Bishop Michael Akasius Toppo who accompanied the injured priest told reporters, “A stranger followed him for some time and attacked Father Soren with a machete.”

“He ducked to save his head but received serious wounds on both hands,” he said.

The assailant fled when hostel boys and parish staff rushed out to help Father Soren on hearing his cries, the bishop said.

This is the second incident of violence in the area in a period of four days.
