With the PDP and BJP deciding to renew their alliance and forming a new government in Jammu and Kashmir to end the stalemate there, the Centre Sunday pledged its full support to the new ministry, and finance minister Arun Jaitley said the Centre may add to Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s Rs 80,000-crore package he had promised in November 2015 if resources permitted.

“There are two guiding factors. One is the agenda for governance and one is the Prime Minister’s package. There is so much in the PM’s package that even if our resources permit us year to year, we will add to it,” Mr Jaitley told PTI, adding that the PDP-BJP alliance is “fully committed” towards implementing the Prime Minister’s package.

Finance minister Arun Jaitley said that it was a “great opportunity to have a popular government there which implements each one of these suggestions”. Asked if the Centre would encourage the new PDP-BJP government in the state them to implement the package, Mr Jaitley said: “We are fully committed on that.”

In November last year, Prime Minister Modi announced a Rs 80,000-crore package for building a modern, progressive and prosperous J&K. The package includes money for providing relief and rehabilitation of 2014 flood victims, rehabilitation of West Pakistan refugees and Kashmiri pandits, roads and highways, health and tourism.

PDP chief and chief ministerial candidate Mehbooba Mufti had met governor N.N. Vohra on Saturday and staked her claim for government formation in the state, with the BJP supporting the first Muslim woman CM of the state. The two coalition partners are yet to decide on the dates of the swearing-in ceremony.
