Odisha: University student dies by suicide after misunderstanding with female friend

Bhubaneswar: A first-year engineering student at a private university in Bhubaneswar died by suicide on Monday, with preliminary information suggesting that a misunderstanding with a female friend may have pushed him into emotional distress, police and family members said.

The deceased, Rahul Yadav, hailed from Chhattisgarh and was pursuing a Computer Science degree at KIIT University. He was found unresponsive in his hostel room and was declared dead soon after. Police have not reported any signs of foul play so far, and an inquiry has been initiated to establish the circumstances leading to the incident.

Rahul’s family members told reporters that he had recently been upset over a strained friendship with a girl studying at the same institution, a matter they believe may have led to his extreme step. Police said they are verifying all statements and examining digital and personal communication records to ascertain the sequence of events.

Senior BJP leader and MLA Saroj Padhi said the state government is monitoring the investigation to ensure due process is followed.

“The government is closely observing the inquiry. If any negligence comes to light, necessary action will be taken. Chief Minister Mohan Majhi has repeatedly said that no wrongdoing will be overlooked,” Padhi said.

University authorities have expressed condolence over the student’s death and said they are cooperating fully with the police investigation. Counselors have been deployed on campus to support students coping with the incident.
