Jaipur: Key witnesses, including Pehlu Khan’s sons, were attacked on Saturday morning. Some unknown men opened fire at them near Neemrana while they were on their way to depose in Pehlu Khan’s murder case.

Aarif and Irshad, sons of Pehlu Khan, Rafique and Azmat are primary witnesses. Pehlu Khan was lynched by a mob on April 1, 2017. Azmat was with him on that day. They left Jaisinghpur in Haryana along with their lawyer Asad Hayat early morning and were on their way to Behror court.

While approaching Gyan Hotel near Neemrana, their vehicle was chased by unknown men in a black Scorpio without a number plate and their vehicle was fired at, after which the Scorpio turned towards Behror and disappeared.

“I along with Pehlu’s sons Irshad and Arif and witnesses Azmat and Rafiq was going to Behror in a car. Amzad was driving the car.  After crossing Neemrana, some unidentified people in a black Scorpio without a number plate started following us. After trying to overtake us and make us stop,” lawyer Arshad Hayat said adding they had to make a U-turn to avoid the SUV after they were fired at.

Subsequently, they went to meet Alwar SP to inform him about the incident. SP Rajendra Singh said that a case has been registered against unidentified persons and the witnesses were immediately provided security cover to go to the court.

Meanwhile, People’s Union for Civil Liberties has sought trial to be moved out of Behror citing concern for the safety of witnesses. “It would be sensible to move the trial outside Behror to Jaipur, Alwar or even outside to Delhi,” the PUCL said.

The Constitution promises the right to free and fair trial to all the citizens, sadly these circumstances are far away from it,” the PUCL demanded in a letter to the DGP
