Bhopal: A Congress MLA on Friday caused anxiety for the Kamal Nath government here by threatening to resign in protest against harassment to him by liquor contractors in his area.

Dharampuri MLA Panchilal Meda had convened a press conference to declare his resignation. However, high drama was witnssed after state minister Pradyumna Singh Tomar suddenly appeared and literally lifted the MLA out of the conference to prevent him from speaking to reporters.

“I am keeping the resignation letter in my pocket. I will tender my resignation,” he told reporters while being dragged out of the venue by Mr Tomar.

Later, Mr Meda was later taken to state home minister Bala Bachhan to pacify him. He was then taken to chief minister Kamal Nath when both the ministers failed in their bid to assuage him.

Mr Nath had a 30-minute closed door meeting with Mr Meda, following which he declared not to push for his resignation.

He alleged that two liqu-or contractors had held him hostage and the police had refused to file an FIR against them. The MLA claimed he had been demanding that a liquor shop that was opened near a school in his constituency be closed.

The Congress in MP is running a minority government with outside help from two BSP MLAs, one SP legislator and four Independents.Congress has won 114 seats, two short of a majority, in the last Assembly elections in MP, which has 230 seats.
