Lt. Gen.' Shimray is Naga army chief

The appointment of Shimray to head the Naga army has been seen as continued dominance of NSCN (I-M) general secretary T. Muivah.

Guwahati: In a significant development, the collective leadership of National Social Council of Nagalim (Issac-Muivah) has appointed “Lieutenant General” Ningkhan Shimray as new commander in chief of the Naga Army.

In an order the political wing of the outfit — the Government of the Peoples Republic of Nagalaim (GPRN) said, “In consultation with the collective leadership, the vice-president General Kholi is pleased to appoint Lt. Gen Ningkhan Shimray as Longvibu (Commander in chief) of Naga army with immediate effect. He will assume office within seven days.” It is significant that Mr Ningkhan Shimray hails from Ukhrul district of Manipur. The appointment of Shimray to head the Naga army has been seen as continued dominance of NSCN (I-M) general secretary T. Muivah, who also hails from Ukhrul district of Manipur.

Though, security agencies are tight-lipped about the development, security sources said that appointment of Lt. Gen Shimray as new commander-in-chief of Nag army would certainly affect the internal dynamics of the outfit.
