New Delhi: The home ministry on Wednesday directed the National Investigation Agency to conduct an investigation into the recovery of explosives in the Uttar Pradesh Assembly. Sources said the ministry received a request for a NIA probe from the state government after which the directives were issued.

The incident was reported on July 12 after the bomb detection squad, during its routine security drill of sanitising the Assembly which was in session, recovered the explosives.

A blue carrybag was found under the seat cushion in the third row. The explosives was found underneath a seat of a Samajwadi Party MLA. After the incident, security at the UP Assembly was beefed up.

Immediately after the incident, UP chief minister Yogi Adityanath had announced that considering the sensitive nature of the case, it would be handed over to the NIA.

Initial investigations into the recovery were carried out by the anti terrorist squad of the state police and  a forensic examination had ruled out that the material found was explosive substance.

However, the NIA will now conduct a detailed investigation into the incident and also, probe a possible security breach at the UP Assembly premises.
