Mumbai: Minutes after the BJP leader Devendra Fadnavis announced his resignation as the chief minister of Maharashtra, Congress demanded an apology.

"Devendra Fadnavis and Ajit Pawar should apologise to the people of Maharashtra. Their government was based on lies and defections and fell like a house of cards," Congress chief spokesperson Randeep Surjewala said.

The Congress party said that the Fadnavis-Ajit government was based on lies and fell like a house of cards.

''The move was not only a failure of Fadnavis but also a slap on faces of their masters sitting in Delhi'', the party said.

Senior party leader KC Venugopal said, "This is a victory of constitutional democracy. They thought through horse-trading they can make government. This is not only a failure of Devendra Fadnavis but also a slap on faces of their masters sitting in Delhi."

Few minutes after Fadnavis announced resignation, Shiv Sena leader Priyanka Chaturvedi shared a picture of Uddhav Thackeray hugging son Aaditya Thackeray in front of a picture of late Bal Thackeray. She captioned it -- ''Jai Ho''

Following the latest 'Maha turn' the Shiv Sena-Congress-NCP would hold a meeting to elect the joint legislative party.

"I think Uddhav ji will be elected," Venugopal said.
