Lucknow: Two days after a man was lynched in Hapur district over suspicion of cow slaughter, a local meat seller of  Bareilly district died in a Delhi hospital after being thrashed by the police.

The man, Salim Qureshi, was beaten up by the cops on allegations of cow slaughter.

His wife Farzana said that Salim was picked up by the cops on June 14 from his home and taken to a private wedding hall where they beat him up severely.

Qureshi, who ran a small meat shop in Baradari area, was summoned by Kankartola police post in-charge Ali Mian Zaidi at the behest of local corporator's husband Anjum Khan, she alleged.

The family admitted a badly injured Salim to a local hospital from where he was referred to Delhi where he died on Thursday night.

The local people staged a protest, placing the body on the road.

SSP Kamlesh Bahadur said the two constables, Shripal and Harishankar, and Kankartola post in-charge Ali Mian Zaidi have been placed under suspension.

The police have also lodged an FIR against the two constables and two others, including Anjum Khan, who tipped them about cow slaughter by the victim.
