New Delhi: Describing as “historic” the hike announced by the government in minimum support price (MSP) of wheat and pulses, Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP)  president Amit Shah on Wednesday said it will help realise Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s goal to double farmers’ income. Earlier, Mr Shah noted the government had announced a “record hike” in the MSP of Kharif produces like arhar, moong and urad.

“The Modi government has announced a historic rise in the MSP of half a dozen crops, including wheat, gram and masur. It is a major decision towards realising Modi’s goal to double farmers’ income and will prove to be a milestone,” the BJP president said in a statement.

He said it will “not only bring happiness to the farmers” but also make India self-reliant in pulses. Mr Shah claimed that for the first time, the Centre has made arrangement to buy crops on the minimum support price so that the farmers do not have to run around to get proper price for their produce.

Citing the rise in MPS in lentils since the BJP-led NDA government came to power in 2014, Mr Shah said it has done in two and a half years what earlier governments could not do for decades. “The BJP commends PM Narendra Modi for this pro-farmers decision that will bring happiness to them,” he said.

The government on Tuesday increased the MSP of wheat by Rs 100 to Rs 1,625 a quintal and pulses by up to Rs 550 per quintal to boost output of these Rabi crops and check prices.
