New Delhi: CPI(M) general secretary Sitaram Yechury on Thursday asked Prime Minister Narendra Modi to ensure a Minimum Support Price for farmers, which will provide 50 per cent net profit to them over production cost.

In a letter to Prime MInister Narendra Modi, Mr Yechury said that during the last three years, the BJP  has done nothing to fulfil the promise they made during the 2014 General Elections.

“The current MSP for various crops fixed by your government barely provides any returns to the farmer,” he said in the letter. “It is my duty to remind you, Mr Prime Minister, that during your election campaign, you had promised a Minimum Support Price that will provide a 50 per cent net profit to the farmer over his production costs. During the last three years, you have done nothing to fulfill this promise. The current MSP for various crops fixed by your government barely provides any returns to the farmer,” it said.

He claimed that the response of the BJP state governments in Maharashtra and Madhya Pradesh has been “inconsiderate and repressive” towards the genuine pleas of the farmers.
